02 · Technology

Radar level measurement is the centre of the portfolio

583 of 952 families (61.2%) carry a code in G01F, measuring volume, flow and liquid level. The next three subclasses support the same product: radar (G01S, 250), instrument construction and general measuring (G01D, 164) and antennas (H01Q, 136). G01F23/284, level measurement by electromagnetic waves, alone appears on 312 families. By measurement principle, radar leads by a wide margin: 312 families against 54 for acoustic, 52 for ionising radiation, 34 for optical and 23 for capacitive level detection.

Query 3A family that covers two principles appears in both rows

The periphery is widening. G01D, instrument housings, supports and general measuring, went from 14 families in 2014–2018 to 150 in 2019–2024, the largest relative shift in the profile. The communication subclasses H04L, H04W and H04Q together moved from 39 to 105. This fits a sensor maker building connectivity and device engineering around its measurement core; a change in classification practice would produce a similar pattern, and the data cannot separate the two.

03 · Arena

VEGA holds the largest arena portfolio of the nine groups examined

The arena is the completed CPC code set below G01F23 plus G01F25/20: 120 symbols, 19,916 families worldwide for 2014–2024. It is defined by classification, not industry: level measurement is used in washing machines, fuel systems, hydropower reservoirs and printer cartridges, so State Grid, Gree, Hewlett-Packard, Robert Bosch and many Chinese universities sit in the ranking. The peer comparison is restricted to firms that sell process-level instruments. VEGA leads with 571 families, ahead of Endress+Hauser (376) and Rosemount (142). That is 60.0% of VEGA's entire portfolio inside one main group. The nine peers together hold 1,289 of the 19,916 arena families.

Name fragmentation in the raw ranking. PATSTAT performs no entity resolution. VEGA appears four times near the top: VEGA GRIESHABER KG (DE) with 571 families, VEGA格里沙贝两合公司 with 112, VEGA GRIESHABER KG without a country code with 95, and GRIESHABER VEGA KG with 22. Consolidated, they yield 571 distinct families, because the other three records sit on families already covered. Rosemount is split 125 / 101, Endress+Hauser across at least five records, and Honeywell and KROHNE each carry a separate Chinese-script record. A ranking read straight off han_name misstates every one of these positions.

04 · Arena trend

VEGA's arena filings rose while the three next peers filed less

VEGA Grieshaber

From 50 arena families in 2014 to a peak of 79 in 2020, and 59 or more through 2023.

Endress+Hauser

From 57 in 2014 to below 36 in every year after 2018.

Rosemount and Honeywell

Rosemount falls from 33 to single digits; Honeywell from 17 in 2014 to at most 3 a year from 2019.

What it means

The four put different amounts of patenting effort into level measurement. It says nothing about their overall R&D: Honeywell and Rosemount remain large filers elsewhere. The arena as a whole grew from 1,045 families in 2014 to 2,439 in 2020.

05 · Peer profiles

VEGA is a radar-and-level house; its peers spread wider

Over each group's full portfolio, VEGA's three strongest subclasses are G01F (583), G01S (250) and H01Q (136). It is the only group in which antennas rank that high: no other peer exceeds 102 families in H01Q. Endress+Hauser is the broad-line instrument house, leading in G01F (990) and carrying 766 families in material analysis (G01N), 295 in pressure and 149 in temperature, where VEGA files 54, 89 and 10. Honeywell and Rosemount are control-system firms whose largest subclass is G05B (787 and 409). KROHNE, Finetek and Berthold are specialists on VEGA's ground, an order of magnitude smaller in it.

Query 7Shading: 300 or more = strong, 100–299 = medium, 1–99 = light, 0 = none

Portfolio sizes differ; cells are absolute counts. A family counts in every subclass it touches, and a large cell for a large filer is not a stronger position than a smaller cell for a smaller filer.

06 · Offices

VEGA files at home first; China rose from 32 to 134 families

655 of 952 families (68.8%) include a German application, and the German count grew hardest: from 143 families with a DE filing in 2014–2018 to 512 in 2019–2024. Behind it come the USPTO (337 families, 35.4%), the EPO (302, 31.7%) and the PCT (200 families, a PCT rate of 21.0%). China is the clearest directional move: 32 families in the first period, 134 in the second. The EPO route slipped from 158 to 145 families; Hungary (53 to 21), Taiwan (20 to 4) and Korea (22 to 10) contracted.

Query 2Assigned by the filing year of the individual application

Two counting notes. The office column is non-exclusive: the 23 office totals sum to 1,879 against 952 distinct families. The period columns are assigned by the filing year of the individual application, not of the family, so a family with a 2018 and a 2020 application appears in both periods; for the US, 142 + 200 = 342 against 337 distinct families.

07 · Inventors and partners

204 inventors carry the portfolio, almost without outside partners

204 distinct inventors cover the whole portfolio, and every family carries at least one inventor record. The twelve most frequently named appear on 39 to 110 families each; The base is widening: 103 inventors on families first filed in 2014–2018, 172 on families first filed in 2019–2024. Many are active in both, so the two do not add up to 204.

Query 5Consolidated by a normalised name key; counts are a lower bound

9 of 952 families (0.9%) carry an application with more than one applicant record. Once VEGA's own name records are excluded, three families (0.3%) remain with an external co-applicant: Binder GmbH (DE), Fehling Instruments GmbH & Co. KG (DE) and the individual applicant Klaus Kienzle (DE), one family each. No university or research-institute co-filings are visible.

Inventor names are consolidated, not resolved. Records are grouped by a normalised name key; records that add or drop a middle name stay separate, so counts are a lower bound.

08 · Grants

62.7% of the 2014–2020 families hold a grant, but only 26.6% of German filings do

Across the whole period 467 of 952 families (49.1%) hold at least one grant. In the cohort old enough to be largely decided, families first filed 2014–2020, the figure is 62.7% (355 of 566). The EPO grants 72.8% and the USPTO 68.8% of what VEGA files there; the German office records grants for 26.6% of the 655 families filed at the DPMA. A national first filing used as priority anchor for the European route may explain this; the data show the outcome, not the intent.

09 · How we counted

How the numbers were counted

  • One family, one countEvery count is COUNT(DISTINCT docdb_family_id). Time series place a family in the year of its earliest application. Office periods follow the filing year of the individual application.
  • A reviewed name ruleperson_name matching VEGA GRIESHABER, VEGA GREISHABER (a spelling error in the data) or the inverted GRIESHABER VEGA: 41 spellings across 109 person records, including the former VEGA Grieshaber GmbH & Co.
  • Applicants, patents of inventionapplt_seq_nr > 0, ipr_type = 'PI', docdb_family_id > 0, filing years 2014–2024.
  • A completed code set for the arenaCPC G01F23 plus G01F25/20, expanded by recursion on the parent chain to 115 symbols, plus 5 deprecated symbols: 120 in all. Peers are consolidated by rule over han_name and person_name together.
Checks and limits
  • Family counts are a lower boundName harmonisation is imperfect, and filings under a spelling that no reasonable rule catches are invisible.
  • Discovery and reviewA wide discovery query returned the 200 most active applicant records for the stems GRIESHABER and VEGA, with no year filter, reviewed record by record. It reached down to records with two families, so any spelling that escaped review is small; a hyphenated or otherwise unmatched spelling remains possible.
  • han_name alone is not sufficienthan_name LIKE '%vega grieshaber%' reaches 95 of the 109 person records; the inverted form and the misspelling carry their own harmonised names and drop out. The han_name set is a strict subset (41 spellings / 109 records against 34 / 95).
  • Negative testWidening the rule to han_name and the Chinese-script record VEGA格里沙贝两合公司 adds exactly one family (+0.1%).
  • Look-alikes excludedSupfina Grieshaber, Maschinenbau Grieshaber, Grieshaber & Co. AG Schaffhausen / Alcon Grieshaber, VEGA CNC Technology Suzhou, VEGA Force International and individuals named Vega.
  • Subsidiary excludedVEGA Americas, Inc. (formerly Ohmart/VEGA Corporation, Cincinnati) files under its own name: 9 families in 2014–2024, none overlapping with the parent's. Including it would raise the portfolio from 952 to 961. No other subsidiary filing under its own name was found.
  • Utility models and designs excludedipr_type = 'PI' only. Applications filed before 2014 or after 2024 are not included.
  • Recent years are provisional2023 and 2024 will rise in later editions; no growth statement ends in them.
  • Code-set completionSubtree by recursion on parent, not by prefix (a prefix pulls in siblings). The deprecated symbols G01F23/0061, /0069, /0076, /0084 and /0092 are no longer reachable through the parent chain and were added back. dpt_cpc_reclassification holds no records touching G01F23 in any edition; the empty union was verified, not assumed.
  • The arena is CPC-basedCPC was used because the comparison spans EPO, USPTO, DPMA, CNIPA and KIPO and CPC is harmonised across family members. It under-represents offices that do not assign CPC: applications filed only in Japan or China without CPC can be missing from the competitor comparison, not from VEGA's own figures.
  • Peers are a chosen setThe nine groups sell process-level instrumentation. Utilities, appliance makers, automotive suppliers and universities appear in the raw ranking but are not treated as peers. Chinese-script records exist for VEGA, Honeywell and KROHNE. A corporate group filing under a name outside the consolidation rules is not included; row sums in the heatmap exceed each group's family total.
  • Inventor consolidationPATSTAT stores one person record per spelling. The key upper-cases, removes punctuation, transliterates German umlauts and sorts name parts, so "ALLGAIER, Volker", "Allgaier, Volker" and "ALLGAIER VOLKER" merge. Middle-name variants are not merged. doc_std_name_id was tested and rejected: it splits "Allgaier, Volker" across four identifiers.
  • Peer portfolios differ in sizePortfolio sizes differ by an order of magnitude; absolute heatmap cells are not market positions.
  • Classification practiceThe G01D rise can reflect changed classification practice as well as new work.
  • Grant status is a snapshotgranted = 'Y' means granted as of this snapshot; a rate that includes families filed from 2021 measures examination speed as much as success. No grants are recorded for the Chinese and Croatian filings and one for the Hungarian; those offices are excluded from the chart rather than shown as zero. WO is omitted: a PCT application is never granted as such.
  • Symbols resolvedAll 1,549 CPC symbols on VEGA's applications resolved against dpt_cpc; no family is silently dropped from the technology profile.
  • Order of magnitude952 families over eleven filing years is roughly 87 a year, consistent with VEGA ranking first among level-measurement instrument makers. No external database figure was queried.
  • EditionsRecomputed on 15 August 2026 against PATSTAT Spring 2026 (patstat_2026a), IPC 20260101 and CPC 202608 as reported by dpt_edition.
